In 1934 he graduated from Whittier College and won a scholarship from the Duke University School of Law. At Duke Nixon became president of the student law association. Nixon graduated from Duke in 1937, third in his class out of forty-four students. After Nixon graduated from Duke the Great Depression was still in place in the United States, there were few jobs. Nixon tried many times to get into law bureaus and firms but was not successful. He returned to Whittier and joined a Whittier Law firm. When he was twenty-six, he joined the Whittier College Board of Trustees. In 1942, Nixon served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Richard M. Nixon was highly qualified for the presidency. Nixon was from the Republican Party. In 1946, Nixon ran for the U.S. House Representatives and won the election, after he was released from the Navy. In 1950, Nixon ran for U.S. Senator in California and won the election by over 700,000 votes. He was also Vice President to Dwight D. Eisenhower.
